Broken Boys: “Hide Shit”
The claim has been made that nobody makes sunny pop quite like our friends in Sweden. Broken Boys are proving that they might also have the corner on urban alienation and KLF (re)sampling, too. The heavily syncopated chains of percussion that form the spine of “Hide Shit” that spikes through the mix like an unnatural heartbeat as synth hits blare and then gently modulate away, just in time for the next. Spoken samples recall some half-understood argument overhead on a late night bus ride, while manipulated wails sing out equally alluringly soulful and unintelligible tones. The video itself is a combination of stark environments, both natural and man made, which compliments the music as a reference to how it was produced, the feel it creates, and its deceptively complex arrangements of relatively stark and simple/minimal elements.
Broken Boys’ Heat and White is now available for free streaming, pay what thou wilt download, and purchase as a CD on Bandcamp
