US Girls: “The Boy is Mine”
Megan Remy emerges from the distorted swamp she’s been lurking in to produce her new record, US Girls on KRAAK. While this new heat adheres to the same minimalistic approach to instrumentation and structure as her previous releases, this time around US Girls pulses with pop blood – albeit suitably mutated – and a thrilling use of dynamics. The self-effacing fuzz and crackle have been toned down with much more emphasis placed on Remy’s amazing voice, which in another decade would have definitely been creeped over by Phil Spector. “The Boy Is Mine,” of course, is a Brandy cover, but it summarizes the current US Girls mission – a multiplicity of voices channeled through one talent and her machines to produce one fearless, haunted music.
