Hailing from Porto, Portugal, Saitam is a one-man bedroom pop project, but based on the breadth and scope of his recently released debut EP, West-East, you’d never know it. With “Encounters,” Saitam surfaces the pan-global mentally that the EP’s title suggests, building layers of melody from an array of sampled instrumentation and a heartfelt voice that sounds like it was captured from some faded but familiar piece of gothic pop. The artist himself describes his approach as “using instruments engraved to some genres and pulling them out of their ‘comfort zone,’” an ethos that could fall into pastiche or excess, but never does. Instead, “Encounters” is deeply felt pop that’s delightfully difficult to place.
