Ø+yn + GMC: “Cumbia Masonica”

Córdoba, Argentina’s Ø+yn have teamed up with GMC, La Plata’s premiere solo sample twister, to form [drumroll, please] Ø+yn + GMC. Combining Ø+yn’s penchant for sprawling, free form rhapsodies with with GMC’s relatively more tightly constructed, but by no means less unhinged, compositions is the type of pairing that seems like a no-brainer, though the collaboration’s result is far from mindless. In “Cumbia Masonica,” Ø+yn’s arsenal of instruments loom their way to the forefront and then cede their places without either proper introduction or goodbyes, even as they’re held closely together by the GMC’s sampled grooves and the airy melodies that prove to be just as transient themselves. As the cooing vocal samples are torn from their mantric pattern, the song itself shifts towards a buzzing crescendo, thick with chimes and organ. It is psychedelic and ritualistic, though neither tired or forced. Taken at its full nine minutes, this track can seem daunting, but luckily it is also approachable in smaller, component pieces. We suggest you try both tacts.

The collaborative release of Popolus Ajeno will be available soon from Pakapi Records
