Orquesta: “Una Supernova”

If most people were to consider a musical accompaniment to a supernova, my bet is they’d think of Wagner, Beethoven, or M83 – musicians whose massive arrangements offer a sonic analog to the immensity of the cosmos. Orquesta, a Dublin-based producer and Meles Meles label founder, flips this notion on his head with “Una Supernova,” the first track and video from his Our Final Expedition EP. Set to NASA footage taken from the documentary In the Shadow of the Moon, Orquesta incorporates South American rhythms, African percussion (a possibly sampled cabasa), and a marimba/xylophone synth hybrid to assemble a soundscape where each feature has room to breath. If it’s Orquesta’s aim recreate the workings of the cosmos with sound, then “Una Supernova” is to be admired for its restraint; each sound has its place and Orquesta understands that we call it “space” for a reason.

The Our Final Expedition EP is out now, and can be purchased on iTunes
