Mascara Snake: “Quiet and Wise”

With his latest release, Mascara Snake is moving into previously unexplored territory. Firstly, Lonely as a Cloud is his first release through a label, which just so happens to be the fine people at Zeon Light. Hooray for that. Secondly, this batch of material finds our old friend Pacôme Genty. exploring a previously untouched realm in his music under the MS name: lyrics. For him, the transition from melodic guitar looping to guitar and vocal based narrative pop is much more fluid than can be expected, largely due to the continuance in theme and the lilting cadence of his singing voice, which came as a very pleasant surprise after so many instrumental releases.

The song  ”Quiet and Wise” was inspired by the film Take Shelter, which revolves around a father dealing with his visions of a pending apocalypse. The songs manages to bottle this sort of paranoia an tension in a pleasantly melancholy shell that, while clearly indicating there are changes on the horizon. Whether those changes are the result of internal or external happenings, something is definitely afoot here in this simple, direct track that in itself represents a similar divergence in approach from Mascara Snake’s earlier material. Regardless, we are already anticipating what comes next.

Lonely as a Cloud is now available on cassette tape (!) from Zeon Light. You can also preview the rest of the album on Souncloud
