Dubai: “Thieves” (NSFW)

DUBAI – Thieves (Official) from alone together on Vimeo.

The product of a collaboration between Anna Barie of These Are Powers and Johannes Buff, Dubai is a brisk walk with your head down through the abandoned lot between punishing electronic static and cooth, loungy grooves. There’s a nonchalant sort of fucked up violence to “Thieves” in particular that never quite surfaces but has an impact that is still felt like a phone book to your backside. In that way, it’s a very social sort of violence and you can feel that every bass lick is pulling your farther into a complicity that borders on being an accessory. The accompanying video is a re-edit of a humorous, NSFW vignette taken from Juzo Itami’s Tampopo that combines most people’s two favorite things, food and sex, in a way that probably far fewer people would admit to being into, but have maybe googled before that one time, promise, just once. That said, this video is going to affect you and the person reading over your shoulder very differently, but Karen Rudd’s aggressive recutting ensures that you are both going to be enthralled in your own rights. Regardless, of your stomach for raw egg yolk on human skin, have a listen to the track enjoy everything that is and isn’t happening in this smooth little number. Just watch out for the prawns. They might bite.

Dubai’s new split cassette tape with Ensemble Economique is available now from Clan Destine Records
